CHICAGO — Think of a corn maze as a problem. Think of the people in the maze as traditional computers trying to solve the problem. They’re limited to attempting one route at a time. But what if they could try all of the potential routes at the same time?THE ‘QUANTUM LEAP’That’s one way of thinking about the difference between our current computers and quantum computers. The ones we use today process information using binary digits or “bits” that are either in the state of zero or one, handling one input, or one maze route, at a time.A quantum computer processes more information faster, using quantum bits – or q-bits. The process is so fast and powerful because the data is in multiple states all at once.“A little bit like spinning a coin on a table,” said Professor David Awschalom, a University of Chicago physicist and the director of Chicago Quantum Exchange. “Is it heads or is it tails? it’s a combination.”Awschalom said it means instead of the single answer we might get from a...'Slower delivery': DoorDash giving warning about not tipping

A Minnesota panel tasked with picking a new state flag and seal saw a flurry of last-minute entries. The State Emblem Redesign Commission reported Tuesday that it received 2,633 entries during the one-month submission period, with hundreds coming in within the final day. Additional mail-in entries sent in before the Monday deadline were not included in that total. The bulk — 85% — were contenders for a new flag, while the rest were submissions for a new state seal.Over the next month, the commission will narrow the field to five finalists each for the flag and seal. And in December, it will select winners. The new designs will take hold next year unless the Legislature votes to veto them.Submissions were required to reflect Minnesota’s shared history, resources and diverse cultural communities. Designers won’t be eligible for a prize or monetary compensation if their idea gets picked. To be eligible, a designer had to be 18 or older, or have a parent or guardian submit on their b...Timberwolves take down defending champion Nuggets to get back to .500

If anything was to be learned about the Timberwolves last season, it was that one performance had literally nothing to do with the next.So it should come as no surprise that two nights after being wiped off the floor in Atlanta, Minnesota downed the defending champion Nuggets with ease Wednesday at Target Center.Minnesota controlled the game from start to finish in its 110-89 victory to get back to 2-2 on the season. The Wolves jumped out to a 9-0 advantage in the opening minutes, expanded it to 18-4 and never allowed the Nuggets (3-1) to get any closer than five from there.“It just shows what we’re capable of,” Mike Conley said in his postgame, on-court interview. “We know we can be a great team, we’ve just got to put it together for four quarters.”It was a stark contrast from two days prior, where Minnesota turned a 20-point advantage into a blowout defeat in a matter of roughly 10 minutes of game time.Minnesota’s approach against the defe...Nuggets drop first game of season as Timberwolves take advantage of Denver’s sloppy first half

The result was their first loss, a 110-89 blowout from the Timberwolves on Wednesday night. The ghost of Bruce BrownAfter the Nuggets won the title, the former sixth man Bruce Brown said Minnesota was Denver’s most difficult playoff opponent during a podcast appearance. The comment was perceived as a slight against the Nuggets’ other victims, but maybe Brown identified something legitimate on his way out the door.Until Wednesday, Denver’s starters hadn’t missed a beat this season. When they shared the court, they had a 69.4% assist rate in the first four games. But the Timberwolves, inconsistent though they may be, at least have the size and defensive capability to make life more difficult for the champs.Denver s...L.A.
