12 cities take L.A. County's no-bail policy to court

A new zero-bail policy has taken effect in Los Angeles County, and now a dozen cities have taken legal action against it, arguing that it will lead to repeat offenders. The no-bail policy allows suspects arrested for what are known as "non-violent, non-serious" crimes, like retail and car theft, will no longer have to post cash bail to be released from jail. Instead, some could be cited and released right after arrest, while others could be taken to a magistrate where conditions would be set."I don't think the public understands that the differential about whether or not you got out of jail was not based upon your risk to the community or the risk to the victim or the risk of failure to appear," said David Slayton, the Executive Officer of the LA County Superior Court. A man was arrested after he allegedly shot at another person following an altercation over a parking spot on Sunday in Buena Park.At 6:01 p.m., Buena Park police responded to a report of a shooting in the parking lot of Porto’s Bakery and Café, located at 7640 Beach Boulevard. When officers arrived, they arrested a potential suspect, 54-year-old Wei Chen of Chino Hills, who was sitting inside his car. According to a Buena Park Police Department news release, Chen fired two shots at another driver after an altercation over a parking space. Chen was charged with attempted murder and booked at the Orange County Jail. The condition of the victim(s) is unclear at this time. Two decomposed bodies were recovered from a riverbed Sunday near Fremont, authorities said Monday.The bodies — believed to be those of a man and a woman — were so badly degraded authorities did not yet know their causes of death or their identities, said Lt. Tya Modeste, public information officer for the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.Fremont police responded about 3:15 p.m. Sunday to a report of two bodies in or near a riverbed in the area of the 1300 block of Old Canyon Road, which runs alongside Alameda Creek across from Niles Canyon Road, Modeste said.Police determined the bodies were in the county’s jurisdiction, and sheriff’s deputies and coroner’s officials responded, Modeste said. The public is invited to pay their respects and sign a condolence book Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.On Thursday, a funeral service for Feinstein will be held at the front steps of city hall beginning at 1 p.m. The public will be able to attend the service.
