INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Katherine Legge remembers returning to the Indianapolis 500 for the second time a decade ago, and the unmistakable feeling of satisfaction she experienced walking through Gasoline Alley and knowing that she was not alone. For the third time in four years, a record-tying four women were in the 33-car field that day.“That was the era of Sarah Fisher and then Danica Patrick came along and then, you know, there’s me and Simona de Silvestro and I just thought it would kind of snowball and grow,” Legge recalled, before pausing for a moment. “But it hasn’t.”Instead, Legge is the only female driver who will start “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” on Sunday. The women’s movement that began when Janet Guthrie qualified for the first time in 1977, gained traction with Lyn St. James in the 1980s and hit its stride with the arrival of Patrick in the early 2000s has stalled out. By 2020, not only was there no female driver in the field for the first time since...DC-area airports get busy as Memorial Day weekend begins

Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) and Providence Care say they’re moving to the next step of their step-down approach to COVID-19.Kingston hospitals have maintained masking within all patient care areas, but during the first phase of the step-down plan staff were allowed to remove masks where they could maintain a metre of distance in areas where there were no patients, clients, or visitors. Now, KHSC and Providence Care are considering two main changes in on-site COVID-19 related restrictions.KHSC is proposing removing mandatory physical distancing and mandatory masking for staff and others in the hospital, however patients can still request their healthcare provider wear a mask and staff and visitors will continue to be asked to mask up in more vulnerable areas including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Dialysis Clinics, Oncology, Emergency Department, Urgent Care Centre, and the Children’s Outpatient Clinic.Masks will continue to be made available at the entran...Do you recognize this man wanted in a Denver bar shooting

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis skipped meetings Friday because he was running a fever after a particularly busy day, the Vatican said. The Vatican No. 2, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, said Francis was tired and attributed the fever to the fact that Francis had greeted, one by one, a particularly big crowd of his school foundation Thursday afternoon.“He wanted to greet all of them and probably at a certain point lost his resistance,” Parolin was quoted as saying by the LaPresse news agency. The last time Francis spiked a serious fever, in March, the 86-year-old pontiff was rushed to the hospital where he was diagnosed with acute bronchitis. He received intravenous antibiotics and was released three days later.A Vatican official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak about the pope’s health, had confirmed Francis didn’t receive anyone in audience Friday “because of a feverish state.”There were no formal audiences scheduled Friday, but Francis keeps a sepa...Woman arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter following fatal Sunrise crash

A crash in March that claimed the life of one pedestrian and left another with serious injuries has taken a new turn as the driver responsible has been arrested and charged. Authorities identified 26-year-old Briana Nakuisha Russell as the driver. She appeared before a judge Friday morning and was ordered to be jailed on a $120,000 bond. The fatal crash occurred along the 3000 block of N University Drive in Sunrise. According to officials, Russell and her passenger had gone out for an evening of drinking along Las Olas. After their outing, they decided to pull over to rest due to Russell’s intoxicated state. When Russell continued her drive, officials said, she lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the crash that occurred blocks away from her home in Sunrise.Following the crash, authorities conducted a blood test on Russell and the toxicology report revealed a reading of 0.197, nearly two and a half times the legal limit of 0.08.Russell now faces charges of vehicular mansla...Disney opposes DeSantis request to disqualify judge in free speech lawsuit

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Disney is opposing a request by Gov. Ron DeSantis to disqualify a judge overseeing the company’s First Amendment lawsuit against the Florida governor and others in which Disney says it was punished for speaking out against Florida legislation that critics have dubbed “Don’t Say Gay.”Disney said in court papers filed Thursday that the request by attorneys for DeSantis, who declared his candidacy for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination earlier this week, didn’t come close to meeting the standards set out in Florida law for requiring a judge to be disqualified.Last week, DeSantis’ attorneys filed a motion seeking to disqualify Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker, who is presiding over the case in federal court in Tallahassee. The motion said Walker referenced the ongoing dispute between the DeSantis administration and Disney during hearings in two unrelated lawsuits before him dealing with free speech issues and fear of retaliation for violatin...Qatargate suspect Eva Kaili set to go back to work at EU Parliament

Who could have possibly seen this coming? The high and mighty Miami Heat have been humbled. The same Heat team that bulldozed through both the Knicks and Milwaukee Bucks and took a 3-0 series lead over the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals now look helpless, and after Thursday night’s Game 5 blowout loss in Boston, they could be beyond saving. The same Miami dogs who nearly ripped out the Celtics’ hearts via the three series-opening victories now look like a herd of deer. And with the Celtics closing the gap, the headlights are on.Make it three straight disappearing acts by Jimmy Butler, who has scored just 59 combined points through the last three games despite opening this series with a 35-point night, followed by a 27-point outing in Game 2. Butler averaged 35 points in the first round against the Bucks but may have hit a wall here with a trip to the Finals on the line.
