JUPITER, Fla. - Two top prospects are taking care of business and then some in their highly-anticipated spring auditions with the St. Louis Cardinals.Twenty-year-olds Jordan Walker and Masyn Winn have worked their way into lineups on a near-regular basis this spring as many Cardinals stars embark on the World Baseball Classic. Homeschooled students came to Missouri’s Capitol last week in hopes they could convince lawmakers to allow them to participate in their local school district’s extracurricular activities.A pair of bills were debated by the Senate education and workforce development committee aimed at expanding access to activities like sports and clubs to students who are homeschooled. “Throughout my elementary school years, I participated in local school and city sponsored activities with my public-school peers,” Jonah Spieker, 16, told the Senate committee. “That came to an abrupt end when I entered the seventh grade. I was cut off from the athletic community that I’ve experienced my whole life.”He could only play football in his local school’s team if he enrolled in two classes, according to Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) policy. Spieker’s brother, Zeke, serves as a legislative assistant to Sen. Jill Carter, R-Granby, who is sponsoring one of the two bills he...Impact of declining scores unclear as Missouri lawmakers continue education debate

As the Missouri House debated legislation last week to allow students to transfer out of their home district, rumors about the state’s declining school performance data lingered. When the numbers became public later in the day, lawmakers were quick to voice their opinions.Missouri students scored worse across the board from pre-pandemic levels, and 112 districts and charter schools performed poorly enough to put them on the verge of losing accreditation. The scores seemed to have had little impact on the open enrollment vote. Roll calls before and after the release of the numbers show little change in support for the bill. But as the shock of the scores sets in, and lawmakers dive deeper into the numbers during their annual mid-session break this week, just how they will alter the trajectory of a litany of education proposals — school vouchers, charter school expansion, changes to district evaluation, teacher pay hikes — that were already making their way through the legislature ...Man wanted in south St. Louis bank robbery

SAN FRANCSICO — Here we go again.I don’t know if two games constitute a home stand, but the Warriors won their Saturday and Sunday games at Chase Center. They did it in impressive fashion, too — beating the two favorites to win the NBA Finals this June.Yes, both the Bucks and Suns were missing their best players, but the victories carried weight for the Warriors, who looked focused and, in turn, also looked like a team that could beat both of those opponents again in the postseason.Which brings the Warriors right back to where they were at the beginning of last week. Can this team do what they did at Chase Center on the road?Scratch that. Can the Warriors do half of that away from their citadel by the Bay?Beggars can’t be choosers at this point.Golden State Warriors’ Jordan Poole #3 after drawing a foul while making a basket in the fourth quarter of their NBA game against the Phoenix Suns at the Chase Center in San Francisco, Calif., on Monday, March 13, 2023.
