House preps for a key vote on Biden impeachment inquiry as Republicans unite behind investigation WASHINGTON (AP) — The House is pushing toward a vote Wednesday to formally authorize the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden as Republicans rally behind the charged process despite lingering concerns among some in the party that the investigation has yet to produce evidence of misconduct by the president. The vote comes as House Speaker Mike Johnson and his leadership team face growing pressure to show progress in what has become a nearly yearlong probe centered around the business dealings of Biden’s family members. While their investigation has raised ethical questions, no evidence has emerged that Biden acted corruptly or accepted bribes in his current role or previous office as vice president.Ahead of the vote, Johnson called it “the next necessary step.” He acknowledged there are “a lot of people who are frustrated this hasn’t moved faster.“ But Johnson said on Fox News he believes the resolution will pass the House and “we’ll be in the best position to do o...

Federal Reserve keeps key interest rate unchanged and foresees 3 rate cuts next year

Federal Reserve keeps key interest rate unchanged and foresees 3 rate cuts next year WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve kept its key interest rate unchanged Wednesday for a third straight time, a sign that it is likely done raising rates after having imposed the fastest string of increases in four decades to fight painfully high inflation. The Fed’s policymakers also signaled that they expect to make three quarter-point cuts to their benchmark interest rate next year. Those envisioned rate cuts — which wouldn’t likely begin until the second half of 2024 — suggest that the officials think high borrowing rates will still be needed for much of next year to further slow spending and inflation. In a statement it issued after its 19-member policy committee met Wednesday, the Fed said “inflation has eased over the past year but remains elevated.” It was the first time since inflation first spiked in 2021 that the Fed has formally acknowledged progress in its fight against accelerating prices. It also provided a hint that its rate-cut efforts may be over, saying it i...

EU failed to tackle corruption in Parliament, MEPs say BRUSSELS — One year into the biggest corruption scandal ever to hit the European Parliament and the Qatargate questions keep coming. Members of the European Parliament on Wednesday spent an hour debating the cash-for-influence allegations during a debate in Strasbourg, with many suggesting they’re unsatisfied with the EU’s response so far. In December 2022, police launched a series of raids across Brussels, rounding up key suspects including high profile political figures, and seizing bags of cash. Suspects were later handed preliminary charges, accused of taking cash or gifts in exchange for doing the bidding of Qatar, Morocco and Mauritania in what became known as Qatargate.Parliament’s authorities have taken some steps to tighten the rules over lobbying and influence in EU democracy. But a number of MEPs used the debate in the Parliament on Wednesday to voice concerns that not enough has been done. “This whole scandal has sullied us all,” Karima Delli from t...

Estonia builds new fence on Russian border VÕRU, Estonia — Estonia is shoring up its border with Russia, this week completing a 40-kilometer fence along its southern frontier with its giant neighbor.“Our ambition is a high-tech modern border infrastructure,” Estonian Interior Minister Lauri Läänemets told POLITICO during Tuesday’s inauguration ceremony, adding that once it’s finished in 2025, “the EU’s eastern frontier running along the Estonian border should be equipped with the most advanced security and drone surveillance systems.” Estonia wants to beef up its border security as worries grow about Russia’s unfriendly actions toward other EU countries. Finland shut its border crossings after accusing Russia of driving migrants and asylum seekers to the frontier to sow discord as payback for the Nordic country’s joining the NATO military alliance. Two of those crossings are now being reopened, but Helsinki is still wary that Moscow will try to weaponize migrant flows. Rus...

Bulgaria moves to end Russia sanctions opt-out as pressure mounts

Bulgaria moves to end Russia sanctions opt-out as pressure mounts BRUSSELS — Bulgarian lawmakers on Wednesday took the first step toward ending a sanctions exemption that has raised millions of euros for Russia, bowing to growing calls for action. The move, while previously planned, came shortly after POLITICO reported that Bulgaria had imported Russian oil above a G7 and EU price cap from August to October, netting €430 million in direct taxes to the Kremlin. The trade was legal because of Bulgaria’s one-of-a-kind exemption to the EU’s ban on Russian seaborne oil sanctions imports. The EU granted Bulgaria the opt-out to insulate the country from dramatic fuel price spikes. But the loophole has also allowed Moscow to profit handsomely. In total, the exemption has led to €2 billion in export revenues for Russia since the sanctions kicked in, resulting in an estimated €1 billion in taxes for Moscow, POLITICO reported last month.Following that report, Bulgaria’s government announced plans to end its sanctions opt-out on March 1 inst...
